Two of Canada's finest choirs join together for the world premiere of this uplifting vocal celebration of North American spirituals.
The Nathaniel Dett Chorale focus on the preservation and performance of Afrocentric music based on classical, spiritual, gospel, jazz, folk and blues roots, while the Elmer Iseler Singers are one of Canada's foremost professional choirs with a repertoire covering 500 years of choral music.
The spectacular voices of these choirs will blend in the performance of spirituals like "Deep River," "Going Home" and, of course, "Amazing Grace."
The symmetry of the local connections to both groups is not lost on Lydia Adams, the conductor of the Elmer Iseler Singers since 1998. As she told me recently, the “harmonic convergence” of both groups here in Niagara was almost pre-ordained due to the fact Iseler came originally from Port Colborne, receiving an honourary doctorate from Brock University, in fact. The Nathaniel Dett Chorale meantime, takes their name from the celebrated African-Canadian composer R. Nathaniel Dett, who was born in 1882 in Drummondville, now Niagara Falls, and lived until 1943.
