Two superb Canadian solo dancers come together for a rare, shared program of contemporary dance and music. From different generations and different training backgrounds, Peggy Baker and Nova Bhattacharya explore the intersections of east and west in Whole Wide World.
Baker will present her 2006 choreography Krishna’s Mouth, set to a haunting cello score by Japanese-American composer Karen Tanaka; and Strand, performed to a beautifully distilled composition for piano by Canadian composer, Ann Southam.
Bhattacharya will present Map of the Known World, choreographed for her by Peggy Baker; and her latest work Unspoken, both featuring original music from Toronto tabla virtuoso, Ed Hanley.
The program will conclude with both performers in Aleatoric Solo Duet.

Peggy Baker is acclaimed as one of the most outstanding contemporary dancers of her generation. After founding and performing with Toronto's Dancemakers in over 50 productions, she has continued to grow as a solo artist through performing, choreographing and teaching around the world. Recipient of the Order of Canada, appointed the first ever artist-in-residence for Canada's National Ballet School, and awarded an honourary doctorate by the University of Calgary, Baker is an extremely talented dancer who brings her technically complex and emotionally charged repertoire to the Centre for the Arts stage.

Nova Bhattacharya is a classically-trained Bharatanatyam dancer who uses her knowledge of contemporary forms to push the boundaries of her art. The Bharatanatyam tradition is one of the oldest of the classical dance forms in India and is known especially for its grace, purity, tenderness and sculpturesque poses. Bhattacharya has opened up Bharatanatyam dancing to explore how this ancient aesthetic merges with new modes of engaging movement.
