An explosion of creativity in downtown St. Catharines



In the Soil Arts Festival has released the 2012 schedule. This year's festival will feature over 70 performances and installations in St. Catharines downtown core from April 27 - 29 2012.



The 2012 In the Soil has planted itself in the heart of downtown with a festival hub on the corner of St. Paul and James Sts in St. Catharines. The Merchant Ale House will be on site with food and drink throughout the weekend and the stage will host some memorable one-time experiences including The Soil Launcher, Vendor Bender - Artisan Market, The Massive Band Project and Rock 'n' Roll Brunch.



"In the Soil is a great way to see what's going on artistically in the Niagara region and beyond. We are known for our rich soil and this showcase proves that we are growing more than just amazing produce here," says Annie Wilson, General Manager of Suitcase in Point.



The 2012 In the Soil Arts Festival weekend has been designed for wide appeal and to expose audiences to new and unique art experiences. The festival will feature live theatre, poetry, music, dance, media and special streetscape art throughout the St. Catharines downtown core.



Early bird festival passes are on sale now for $20 - All-inclusive access to theatre, music, media, film, poetry, dance and special events throughout the festival. Passes are available for purchase online and at selected locations in St. Catharines.

In the Soil is thrilled to announce support from the Department of Canadian Heritage and the St. Catharines Performing Arts Centre. The festival takes root each year thanks to a growing team of business, government, not-for-profit and social service organizations.



The festival is brought to you by Suitcase in Point Theatre Company and festival partners to celebrate the creation of new work, encourage innovation, and provide intimate and uncommon platforms for audiences to experience art.



Last year over 250 artists and 2500 festival patrons came together to celebrate the arts of Niagara and beyond. This year, we're bringing another rich and fruitful harvest in our aim to make a Niagara that is self-determining and culturally distinct.

Government of Canada supports
Brock’s Centre for the Arts

Brock University’s Centre for the Arts will be able to present its 2012-13 and 2013-14 Professional Entertainment Series, thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada.

Rick Dykstra, MP for St. Catharines, made the announcement yesterday on behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

The $120,000 in funding will support the 43rd and 44th editions of the Centre’s Professional Entertainment Series, which runs form September 2012 to March 2014. The series features more than 70 music, dance and theatre performances.

The funds will also support the Centre’s outreach activities, which includes master classes, school concerts, workshops, lectures and community discussions.

“It is important for the citizens of St. Catharines – and for all Canadians – to have access to quality arts and culture presentations,” said Dykstra. “Organizations like the Centre for the Arts contribute greatly to the cultural vibrancy of St. Catharines and the Niagara region.”

“The Centre for the Arts has been the recipient of funding from Canadian Heritage since its inception in 2002,” says Debbie Slade, director of Brock’s Centre for the Arts.

“We’re honored to be recognized for our professional presentation series that provides a diverse lineup of outstanding emerging, established and international artists and for our educational and outreach activities,” says Slade. “This level of funding and support from our Government is critical to our success and we thank them for their ongoing commitment to the arts in Canada.”

The Government of Canada has provided funding through the Arts Presentation Canada program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada’s culture through professional arts festivals, presentation of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
